the title of liberty

the title of this blog has reference to the ancient people of america who had separated into larger groupings of people - namely the nephites who were a free people, generally loved and followed God and who valued the rights of their families, communities and nations. opposed to them were was a larger nation, named the lamanites, who generally were a people who hated the nephites, were led by wicked kings, loved war and were constantly being "riled up" to fight.

one of the greatest problems faced by the nephites was the trouble caused by disaffected people, hungry for power, who joined with the lamanites, convinced them of some terrible wrong that had been committed against them some time over the past centuries, and then agitated them to the point of coming out in war.

it was in this environment that a great military leader, captain moroni, was given command of the troops and went about securing the frontier land and cities against a constantly encroaching lamanite army. a free people with an elected ruler, funded the troops, guaranteed the mission and sent replacements and supplies. for a time.

at one point all of the support from the main city began to dry up. the troops were deployed valiantly fighting for their lives when, unbeknownst to them, a coup had taken place and wealthy, ruling class had displaced the judges and established a king over them. because the they weren't loyal to the judges - who were loyal to the troops, they ceased supporting the brave men who were sacrificing their lives to guarantee the freedoms of those "back at home" far from harm's way. it even got to the point where these "king men" began to negotiate with the enemy so that they could ally themselves to complete their power grab at the expense of the loyal "free men" soldiers.

it is an amazing and true story of the great nations that inhabited the americas several thousand years ago, pre-dated the mayan, inca and aztec nations.  You can read this story in the Book of Mormon.  You will find it most amazing!!
the parallels with what is happening today are daunting. when you think about the past administration who bravely fought to fund the troops overseas fighting an enemy out for nothing but the destruction of america's freedoms. a contentious opposition looking for any way to stop the funding of the troops, or to break the mission - despite the cost. looking for a new way of governing and decrying, mocking and abusing the very things that the people and soldiers were fighting for.

in comes a newly elected president whose first statements led one to believe that he would stop the funding of the wars, began open dialogue with dangerous states, continue the push to destroy the framework of our nation and the freedoms it protects. it is an insightful look at past histories replaying themselves anew.

we should learn from them. we certainly do not advocate a return of the fighting leadership to come back and "clean house" as happened with the nephites. rather, we should stand up for and work within the political process to replace bad leaders with good. we should look for our own "captain moroni's" - men and women of strength and character and elect them to office to turn the country back to its great roots.
