Want to write a little about my home town"Vincennes, Indiana" where I grew up. Some of the areas had names much like the suburbs of today, except ours sounded kind of funny!
Pear Orhard - where I grew up
Bunker Hill - where dad grew up
North End - wasn't highly thought of as a great place to live
Pearl City - place where homeless lived
Bowman Terrace - low cost housing area
Burnett Heights- where the rich lived
Gregg Park- big park on 7th st. where we would have big family picnic's
Rainbow Beach - a big city swimming pool where Bump and I went to swim every summer. Orphan's Home- we would usually walk past the corner where this stood with was a big iron fence around the whole thing and children everywhere. they would come up to the fence and look through the bars and watch as you went by. So sad. You don't see that anymore. Guess they have a better system today.
Skating Rink-Sat. nights were a big deal with Bump and I. Its when we went to the skating rink . I loved to skate, even danced on skates. Such a fun time!
Uncle John's Kiddie Land was another good spot, rides of all kinds. Bump worked there once.
Drive Inn Threater- a favorite was going to the drive in. Went with Roscoe and family , took our own bag of popcorn and set sometimes in back of truck to watch the movie.
Bump and I would save bottle caps and go to movie on Sat. mornings. We had three choices:
New Moon Threater
Pantheon
Fort Sackville
We would walk to town which wasn't so far, we had a short cut, took a path that cut through some neighborhoods and walked over this hump and we always said a dead person was buried there. ha. Life was so different back then.
We would go to " Adams " a hangout for kids and drop money in the jukebox at" Mac's" and have something to eat or drink. The "Soda Fountain" at the 5 & 10 was also a big deal for me cause mom once in awhile would treat me to a coke and grilled cheese there. The jukeboxes were everywhere, just drop in your quarter ,playing those little 45 LPM records by your favorite singer. Poodle skirts were the inn thing/ went on to make Leslie, Stacey and Jenny each one.
